SIGNIFY (Euronext: Light), the world leader in lighting, harnesses the power of sunlight in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. After an initial product launch in India earlier this year, Signify is introducing Philips SunStay, an integrated solar street light, and Philips LifeLight, an innovative solar lantern in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Vietnam and on the African continent.
“Street lighting powered by the sun is one of the fastest growing segments in public lighting and the most sustainable,” said Alaa Ameen, CEO of Signify Saudi Arabia. “Our new solar lantern makes the lives of people in off-grid communities and those embracing renewable energy significantly better. The Kingdom is on a drive to build renewable energy infrastructure as part of the new Vision. Our new lantern supports this drive, and enables people to transition from carbon generated energy without impacting the quality or supply of lighting.”
Philips SunStay combines solar panel, luminaire, charge controller and battery in one housing. This makes it compact, easy to install and maintain. It also helps save on cabling costs, reduces carbon footprint and lowers overall capital and operational expenditure. With an output of 2,000 and 3,000 lumens and an efficacy of 175 lm/W, SunStay is more efficient than existing solar street lights.
Philips LifeLight is suitable for indoor and outdoor and designed for people in off-grid communities. The lantern comes with a USB port for charging phones and other devices, which is a widely appreciated feature[1]. The second generation LifeLight has a new replaceable battery to extend its life further.
On top of bringing light to households without electricity, solar-powered lanterns improve energy efficiency and improve people’s health. The Saudi Government is calling for conscious consumption and elimination of wasteful usage of energy and electricity in key cities and towns. — SG
