JEDDAH — Egyptian serial "Al Zawga Al Thanyah (The Second Wife)" is being panned by critics for its poor screenplay and performances of the actors. The series is an adaptation of a popular 60s eponymous movie "Al Zawga Al Thanya."

The son of the director Salah Abu Seif said that the producers depended only on the success of the original movie, which still secures a spot in the top 100 Egyptian movies of all time, and did not add anything valuable to the series.

He was also not satisfied with the actress' work in the serial compared to the veteran actors — Soad Hosny, Salah Mansour, Shoukry Sarhan and Sana’a Gamil — who had justified each character.

He also said that the serial progressed slowly and bored the viewers.

Egyptian critic Sabri Fawaz in his interview with Al-Madina Daily, said that Ayten Amer, who supposedly emulated the role played by Hosny, took a huge risk by playing Fatima as she did not justify the role of a traditional, romantic and loving wife.

Other critics also thought that Amer had failed to essay the role of Fatima — unlike Hosny.

The serial, directed by Khairy Besharah, also stars Amr Waked, Ola Ghanem, Ayten Amer and Amr Abdul Jalil.
