Riyadh — Building and shop owners in Riyadh have been asked to remove barriers hindering the movement of pedestrians on pavements and walkways.

Riyadh Mayoralty stressed that the safety and comfort of pedestrians is always a priority. This is the reason the mayoralty made pavements, planted trees, provided lighting and sitting areas for pedestrians.

It said putting barriers on pavements is a violation of regulations.

The mayoralty said that reserving parts of the area in front of buildings for private parking also constitutes a violation.

Many building owners put “No Parking” stickers on the outer walls of their buildings, and if anyone parks his car there building residents vandalize the car.

Riyadh Mayoralty also said that violations include erecting fences in front of under-construction buildings, dumping construction waste, parking cars on pavements, damaging or changing the design of pavements or covering or painting them, and placing fixed or mobile signboards on pavements.

Those who place billboards on the façades of buildings and shops which violate regulations will also face penalties, the mayoralty said.
