The stolen dreams of Jeddah

Abdu Khal

Okaz

I will begin my article by talking about Prince Khalid Al-Faisal and the city of Jeddah. The prince does not need any more praise; what he needs is for us to hold on to his dreams for Jeddah and for us to belong to the First World. He is no stranger to accomplishments, as he has been accomplishing great things ever since he was the General President of Youth Welfare.

Prince Khalid is a modern man with new ideas and big dreams; all he needs is helping hands that share his futuristic views and understand his vision.

When the new mayor of Jeddah Saleh Bin Ali Al-Turki appeared in his latest speech, he talked about all the problems the city of Jeddah is suffering from. Can we consider him a man with ambition? Is he a modern man who dreams of belonging to the First World?

To be honest I did not like the speech of the new mayor, because everything he talked about is overplayed in newspapers and discussed in many gatherings. Ever since he announced the creation of a council for saving Jeddah, I have not seen many changes. Doesn’t the mayor know that the citizens of Jeddah have been falling into open holes in the street all over Jeddah? And that is just one example of the things that prevented Prince Khalid Al-Faisal from realizing his dreams for the city. The citizens of Jeddah above all others know best about all of the problems facing the city.

I am sorry to say that all of the dreams of Prince Khalid Al-Faisal have been let down by officials and administrators who did not believe in his futuristic dreams of change. In order for his dreams and our dreams to come true we need revival and by that I mean the true meaning of the word, the one that does not come up in news or declarations; revival means to make true and tangible changes.

The surprise in the new mayor’s speech is not the problems that he has mentioned, but it will be in the actions he will take, because all previous mayors who came before him have said the same things and then have sat back and relaxed while doing nothing to fix the problems. Dreams call for a revolution in action and expertise.

Lastly, I will praise the recent act of destroying the wall around the beach as the first step towards evolution. Dreams can only come true with continuous change and applied laws. Hence, in all honesty, I say that we suffer from the inability of achieving our dreams.
