Our defenders on social media

Khalid Al-Suliman

SAUDI society becomes more united whenever the Kingdom faced a national crisis. Society comes together against any danger that threatens the peace and security of the country.

At a time when Saudi Arabia is facing a viscous media campaign abroad with threats coming from foreign politicians, the Saudi people proved to be the first line of defense for their country.

If the military is mobilized along the border to protect the country and its people, Saudi people armed with their awareness successfully stood against the vicious attacks on social media. They proved to be brave soldiers in this social media battle, which is just as important as any military confrontation in the battlefield.

Saudi activists filled the gap left by our media that did a poor job in communicating with the international audience and which have been suffering from many shortcomings.

I have read the responses of Saudi Twitterati on the accounts of foreign newspapers, foreign journalists and American and European politicians. They used a convincing language and presented solid evidence against these fake accusations and to those who jumped into conclusions against our country.

However, individual efforts do not create a strong media. The Twitter users no matter what they do to serve their country cannot substitute the work of professional media institutions, which is based on strategic plans using professional tools.

The latest crisis proved again the need for strong media institutions that are just as effective as our political and economic representatives abroad.
