January 08, 2019

RIYADH — Success International School, Riyadh conducted a fire safety awareness and fire marshals training program for the students.

The coach of the day was Engr. Mohammed Azizuddin, founder member of Indian Engineers Forum (IEF), Riyadh. A senior mechanical engineer working in Riyadh since 1992, he presented information on fire and safety measures to students. He demonstrated and trained the students with practical evacuation in a fire drill.

In his presentation titled “Learn not to burn” he highlighted the importance of fire safety and advised the students to equip themselves with process for escape and evacuation in case of an emergency. He explained in detail the escape plans and how to maintain a logbook for Fire Fighting Maintenance System.

He said carelessness is the main reason for major fire accidents. With proper care and maintenance of fire safety systems such accidents can be avoided. He explained the threat and risk of fire at various places like school, home, working place, super markets, shopping malls, public places etc.

He said the main cause of major fire incidents are poor electricity fittings, carelessness at kitchens, gas cylinders near working places, igniting of garbage, fire crackers, smoking, burning wood or garbage to generate heat in winters, etc.

He practically demonstrated the handling and usage of fire safety equipment like cylinder and extinguisher. After the demo of Engr. Mohammed Azizuddin, a group of students practically demonstrated the evacuation by crawling on their knees. The student fire marshals also rushed back to the classes to rescue their ‘mates’ who were left behind and brought them out on their shoulders safely.

Azizuddin advised the students to always help others during evacuation as weaker people, elders and little children need your help. He advised in case of emergency be brave and don’t panic. “Leave the place immediately, avoid lifts and use stairs, if needed crawl on the land and rush to the assembly point,” he stressed.

Highlighting the importance of various emergency signals he asked the students to learn them. Those signs displayed near emergency exit doors are very important and the signs should be strictly followed in case of any emergency.

He appreciated the management of Success International School for equipping the school premises with adequate fire safety equipment with full-fledged fire safety system in the school. He advised the management to maintain a logbook by timely recording inspection of fire safety equipment and fire alarms. Regular tests should also be done to see if fire alarms are in good condiiton.
