RIYADH —
The Public Prosecution and the Ministry of Labor and Social Development are considering the inclusion of violence against house drivers, maidservants, and elderly people in the Protection Against Abuse law.

Sources told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that stringent provisions will be incorporated in the law to guarantee the rights of these people.

There is also a plan to draft a special law to ensure protection and care of elderly people, including parents.

Majed Qaroob, a lawyer, appreciated the Public Prosecution’s move to tackle the negative phenomenon prevailing in society, saying this will help correct wrong notions with regard to the treatment of different members of society.

“The move is in line with the true principles and values of the Islamic Shariah law that calls for fair and equal treatment of workers and taking care of parents and the elderly,” he said.

Faisal Al-Mashouh, another lawyer, said the proposed law will help bring respect, recognition and protection against abuse domestic workers and elderly people.

It also shows that punishment for abusers of these people will be similar to the punishment of those who abuse children and women.
