BEIJING — Andy Murray said that his comeback from career-saving hip surgery was progressing better than expected despite going down fighting in the China Open quarter-finals on Friday.
The 32-year-old Briton lost 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) to top seed Dominic Thiem in Beijing, but said: "I think this (week) was maybe the best in terms of how I played since I came back.
"It was great for me, I played three matches in four days, which is quite a lot.
"Actually I felt better than I expected today, as well," said the former No. 1, who had a major operation in January and only returned to singles tennis in August.
Asked by AFP if he was further ahead than he expected to be in his comeback, he replied: "Yeah, maybe.
"I'm getting there, this week is better than last week, I hope next week is better than this week," the three-time Grand Slam champion said.
"That's how I have to try to keep going to see where my limit is, I don't think I'm at that limit now.
"I think I can keep improving. That's what this week has shown me."
Murray had the Beijing crowd behind him against the Austrian Thiem, ranked fifth in the world to his opponent's 503rd.
But Murray lost his first service game, putting himself under pressure immediately.
At times there were shades of the Murray that topped the world rankings in 2016, but the second set started in the same way as the first, the Briton having his serve broken.
Murray, who says that he now has no pain in his hip and it is a question of building up match fitness, looked down and out as Thiem served for the match.
But he does not know how to quit and a nervy Thiem surrendered his service game for 5-5. Murray went up 6-5, before Thiem forced the tie break.
He carried that momentum to victory and the 26-year-old Thiem plays Karen Khachanov of Russia in the last four.
Murray will go straight to the Shanghai Masters, where he will face a tougher field, and conceded that he was not yet at the stage of being able to challenge the top players.
"I think I need a few more weeks of kind of playing matches like this, two, three, four matches in a week, trying to play consistently well in all of those matches to say I'm playing top-20 tennis or something like that, he said.
Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece will play second seed Alexander Zverev in the other semifinal in an intriguing clash between two rising stars of men's tennis.
Germany's Zverev, at 22 a year older than Tsitsipas, has cruised into the last four, yet to drop a set.
In the women's draw, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty said she produced some of her best tennis this year as she battled into the semifinals with a gutsy victory over Petra Kvitova.
The Australian came from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will play Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.
"From my opinion, that was one of the highest-quality matches I played all year," said the 23-year-old Barty, the reigning French Open champion.
"Petra always has a way of bringing out the best in me, she really does."
Reigning champion Caroline Wozniacki faces Naomi Osaka who beat Bianca Andreescu 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, in the other women's semifinal.
Zverev defends move
to play with Federer
Zverev on Friday defended his decision to play four lucrative exhibition matches against Roger Federer in Latin America, having previously complained the season was too long.
The 22-year-old German takes on the Swiss legend between Nov.r 19 and Nov. 24 in Santiago, Bogota, Mexico City and Quito.
It coincides with the new-format Davis Cup Finals, which the world No. 6 said last year that he would not play in because he needed the time off.
"That will be my holiday, it's not like playing a tournament so we won't go there and practice hours a day," Zverev, one of the biggest young talents in Tennis, said.
"So it's going to be very different — we'll play the match, we'll have a lot of fun, we'll try to win against each other, but it's not the same," Zverev said after reaching the China Open semi-finals in Beijing.
