Beirut boils

December 17, 2019

Protesters chant slogans as they gather near the home of caretaker prime minister Saad Hariri in central Beirut on Tuesday after parliamentary consultations to nominate a new premier were postponed. Dozens of people were wounded in overnight clashes between security forces and supporters of Lebanon's two main Shiite political parties. It was the latest incident of violence in what have been largely peaceful protests since Oct. 17 against a political class deemed inept and corrupt. The street movement pushed the prime minister to step down on Oct. 29, but the country's bitterly divided political parties have failed to agree on a successor. Shortly before midnight on Monday, young supporters of Shiite political parties Hezbollah and Amal tried to attack the main anti-government protest camp in central Beirut. — AFP
