JEDDAH — Several neighborhoods in Jeddah are continuing to suffer from burst water pipes and flooded streets.

Two pipes recently burst in the Al-Bawadi and Al-Nuzhah neighborhoods, flooding the streets, causing traffic jams and creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Al-Bawadi residents claim that they have been suffering for days now due to water leaking into the streets.

“This leakage has also caused a water shortage and the National Water Company (NWC) has not responded to our repeated complaints,” a resident said.

A pipe burst in the Al-Nuzhah neighborhood caused water to seep into the streets for about four days while the authorities allegedly ignored complaints from residents.

Farraj Al-Harbi, a resident of the area, said water has accumulated around houses, causing worries that it may damage the structures. Water accumulating in streets also causes traffic jams in the area.

Director of Jeddah Health Affairs Dr. Sami Badawood has warned the public against stagnant water, which, he said, becomes a perfect breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

There is continuous coordination between health authorities and the municipality to flush out stagnant water, he said, adding that parents should prevent their children from playing in these waters, especially after sunset.
