Disobeying rules causing surge in corona cases: Saudi official

RIYADH —
The combined tally of patients who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia jumped to 190,823, after 4,387 more infections were reported over the last 24-hour period, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

Ministry spokesman Dr. Muhammad Al-Abdel Ali was quoted by Saudi Press Agency as saying that the spike in cases is directly due to lack of compliance with precautionary measures such as social distancing. The spokesman continued to urge people to comply with the rules implemented to slow the spread of the deadly virus.

The ministry said the combined figure of patients who have won the battle against the merciless COVID-19 infection has jumped by 3,648 to 130,776, whereas in the meantime, 50 more patients succumbed to the disease, lifting the national death toll to 1,649. There are 58,408 active cases in the country of whom 2,278 are critical, the spokesman said.

Hufof with 980 new infections, topped the list on Tuesday. It was followed by Riyadh with 342 cases. There were 323 infections in Mubarraz, 308 in Dammam, 287 in Makkah, 229 in Taif, 167 in Jeddah, 144 in Abha, and 132 each in Madinah and Khamis Mushayt. The other cases were detected in cities and provinces across the country, the spokesman said.
