RIYADH —The Shoura Council is examining the proposal of ending the custodianship of minors by guardians above the age of 18. The General Authority of the Shoura approved referring the report of the Islamic and Judicial Affairs Committee with regard to the amendment of the Legal Referral Law by adding an article in this regard.

According to the amendment, minor’s custodianship would cease after the attainment of age 18 unless there is any court order to continue it in specific cases.

In its virtual session on Wednesday, the Council’s authority referred the report of the Committee for Social Affairs, Family and Youth on a draft proposal to amend some articles of the Anti-Harassment Law to the Council’s agenda for discussion during its upcoming sessions.

The authority decided to forward the report of the special committee regarding the study of a draft proposal to combat spinsterhood and divorce to the Council. This comes as a move of the Council to activate the legislative role of its members by proposing new regulations and amending the existing regulations.

This is in implementation of Article 23 of the Shoura Council Law, which gives the Council the authority to propose a new law or to suggest an amendment of existing law, and to study that in the Council and raise what the Council decides to send it to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman to take the appropriate decision on it.
