MUSCAT — Oman on Friday reported 1,889 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the Sultanate to 53,614, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health carried by Oman News Agency.

The ministry also announced eight more deaths from complications caused by coronavirus infection, raising the total number of virus-related fatalities in the country to 244.

Of the new cases, there are 1,268 Omani citizens and 621 expatriates from different countries, the ministry said.

The ministry added that a total of 1,234 more patients have recovered from the deadly virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 34,255.

The ministry reiterated its call asking everyone to adhere to social-distancing regulations issued by the concerned authorities and stay at home and go out only when it is absolutely necessary.

There has been a spike in the number of new infections in the Sultanate, prompting the authorities to impose more stringent penalties for violating precautionary measures.
