MUSCAT — Oman on Thursday recorded 590 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of confirmed infections in the Sultanate to 79,159, the Ministry of Health said in a statement carried by Oman News Agency. Thursday’s single-day infection number was one of the lowest recorded in this month.

Of the new cases, 496 were Omani citizens and 94 expatriates from different countries, the ministry said.

According to the statement, the country's death toll from the virus reached 421, nine more fatalities than what was reported on Wednesday.

A total of 1,181 people recovered from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 61,421.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that it would temporarily stop announcing coronavirus numbers for five days, starting from Friday (July 31). The announcement of coronavirus cases will resume Aug. 5 (Wednesday).

The ministry urged all citizens and residents to avoid gatherings and family visits, maintain physical distancing of at least 2 meters, wear face masks and keep washing the hands with water and soap.
