India records over 60,000 new COVID-19 cases

NEW DELHI — India on Wednesday reported 60,963 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 23,30,327, according to a statement from the health ministry.

The ministry also announced 834 new deaths from complications caused by COVID-19, taking the total number of virus-related fatalities to 46,091 since the outbreak of the epidemic.

Meanwhile, the recoveries from the deadly disease surged to 16,39,599, according to the ministry’s figures.

India had crossed the two million mark on Aug. 7.

There are 6,43,948 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently, accounting for 27.64 percent of the total caseload.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, a cumulative total of 26,15,297 samples have been tested up to Aug. 11 with 733,449 samples being tested on Tuesday.


Many states like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are now witnessing a dramatic rise in new cases, while infections are declining in initial hotspots like Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. — Agencies
