NEW DELHI — India on Tuesday reported 83,809 new coronavirus cases, the lowest daily spike in a week, bringing its total caseload to 4.93 million, just 70,000 short of five million-mark, according to a statement from the health ministry.

The health ministry also reported 1,054 new deaths from complications caused by COVID-19, driving the number of virus-related fatalities in the country 80,776.

With 4.93 million confirmed cases, India has the second-highest total in the world after the U.S. Infections have maintained an upward surge amid ease in coronavirus restrictions nationwide. More than 600,000 new cases have been confirmed in the last week alone.

Maharashtra, with more than 1 million cases, remains the worst-affected state in India, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, around 30 lawmakers have tested positive for COVID-19. Many of them tested positive after undergoing compulsory coronavirus tests at the parliament premises before the start of the 18-day monsoon session on Monday. — Agencies
