RIYADH — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, have congratulated Yoshihide Suga on his election as the prime minister of Japan, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

In their congratulatory messages, the Saudi leadership wished the new Japanese premier all success and the people of Japan more progress and prosperity.

Earlier in the day, Japan’s Parliament elected Suga as the prime minister, replacing long-serving leader Shinzo Abe. Suga, who is considered to be the right-hand man of his predecessor, was chosen as leader of the ruling party on Monday.

Suga, who was chief Cabinet secretary in Abe’s government, unveiled his own Cabinet later Wednesday with familiar faces to stay the course set by his predecessor.
