RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has expressed concerns over the deadly fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday citing an official statement.
“The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is monitoring with great concern and interests the developments of the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” the statement read.
“Saudi Arabia also urges the two parties to cease fire and resolve the conflict peacefully in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions,” the statement added.
The Saudi truce call comes as the fighting over a disputed region entered a second day on Monday, with reports of 15 more soldiers killed and both sides accusing each other of using heavy artillery.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s parliament on Monday condemned what it said was a “full-scale military attack” by Azerbaijan on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and said Turkey’s involvement in the crisis could risk destabilizing the region.
“The international community should take active steps to prevent not only aggression by Azerbaijan but also Turkey’s ambitions to be involved in the ... conflict which will lead to the region’s destabilization,” parliament speaker Ararat Mirzoyan said.
Tensions between the countries have been growing for months over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an enclave legally considered to be part of Azerbaijan but which has been run by ethnic Armenians since it declared independence in 1991. — Agencies
