MOSCOW — Russia's daily tally of new coronavirus cases rose to its highest since May 11 as authorities reported 11,615 new infections nationwide, including 4,082 in Moscow.

According to a statement on Tuesday from the country’s coronavirus operative response headquarters, 188 people died overnight, pushing the official death toll to 21,663.

The total number of cases registered since the beginning of the outbreak stands at 1,237,504, the statement said.

The number of coronavirus cases recorded daily in Russia has been growing steadily since early September, when this figure first topped the 5,000-mark and then reached 6,000 by Sept. 19 for the first time after July. Sept. 25 saw over 7,000 and Sept. 28 over 8,000 new cases.

During the first days of October, the number of coronavirus cases recorded in Russia in one day first surpassed the mark of 9,000 and then 10,000.

Moscow has seen the most rapid growth in the number of coronavirus cases recorded daily and the highest number of active infections among Russian regions — 4,082. As many as 1,156 patients earlier diagnosed with coronavirus in Moscow have recovered and been discharged from the hospital, and 31 others have died.

The cumulative number of new coronavirus cases recorded in the 85 regions of Russia over the period of the pandemic has reached 1,237,504. As many as 988,576 patients diagnosed earlier with coronavirus have recovered and been released from the hospital, including 6,252 over the past 24 hours alone, according to data. — Agencies
