Saudi leaders congratulate Kenyan president on Independence Day

RIYADH — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman have sent cables of congratulations to Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on the eve of his country's Independence Day.

In their congratulatory messages, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince wished the Kenyan president good health and happiness and the government and people of Kenya steady progress and prosperity.

Independence Day, which is also known as Republic Day (Jamhuri Day), is celebrated on Dec. 12 every year. It is Kenya's National Day, marking two key events in the history of the country. It celebrates Kenya becoming a republic on Dec. 12, 1964, and also marks the country's independence from the United Kingdom a year earlier on Dec. 12, 1963. — SG
