MUSCAT — Oman has announced it will close its borders, beginning on Tuesday for one week following reports of the appearance of a new strain of the coronavirus in some European countries, the Oman News Agency reported on Monday.
According to the decision taken by the committee tasked with tackling developments in the country, the entry and exit from the Sultanate via all travel outlets — land, sea, and air — is prohibited with effect from 1 a.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 22, 2020) for a period of one week.
The committee took the decision after assessing situations in different countries around the world about the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant and measures undertaken to protect individuals and societies from the fierce virus attack and fast propagation, the ONA reported.
The decision exempts cargo aircraft, ships, and trucks.
According to the ONA report, the committee will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation of the new Covid-19 virus strain and will take appropriate decisions accordingly.
The committee said that the decision is part of the coronavirus preventive measures with an aim to protect individuals and society from the spread of the virus.
