JEDDAH — Saudi cyclist Mishaal Al-Ghunaim emphasized that the "Dakar Rally 2021" race, which the Kingdom is hosting from Jan. 3-15, provides an exceptional opportunity to international competitors and their technical support teams to explore the stunning Saudi natural geography, and the environmental and climatic diversity of local tourist destinations.

This contributes, directly or indirectly, to the tourism of Saudi Arabia in various regional and international markets, according to Al Ghunaim.

The 35-year old cyclist is taking part in the big event sponsored by the national identity of tourism, "the soul of Saudi Arabia".

He stated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's hosting of the "Dakar Rally" will enhance its future tourist presence, especially as the contestants will travel approximately 7, 646 km, during which they will get to know its varied topography, from deserts, mountains, plains, plateaus, muddy lands, and sand dunes.

The rally route, starting from Jeddah, passes through Bisha and Wadi Al-Dawasir, then Riyadh, Buraidah, Hail, Sakaka, Neom, AlUla and Yanbu, offers a diverse terrain and weather. The rally finishes in Jeddah in the middle of this month.

Al Ghunaim, who is participating for the second time in the "Dakar Rally", said that what distinguishes the event is that it coincides with the launch of the Saudi Tourism Authority’s "Saudi Winter" Season, which was launched on Dec. 10, 2020.

He added that, "The international race is an exceptional sporting event with a flavor. It is touristy; with the contestants, including drivers of vehicles, motorcycles, four-wheel-drive bicycles, and support technical crews, enjoying the picturesque landscapes mixed with changing weather that varies between cold and temperate climates, with a great opportunity to explore the charming areas of the Kingdom.”

He noted that direct tourism marketing is the most influential promotional method for tourism, especially through various international sporting events.

He said: “The positive indicator in this great international race organized by Saudi Arabia is that it will be broadcast to 190 countries around the world, not to mention the tourist impressions that will be conveyed by the contestants.

“Their number is 559, representing 49 nationalities, and they are sure to voice their feelings to their families and media about the Saudi tourist areas.” — SG
