CAIRO — Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Aboul Gheit said Monday all efforts exerted to solve the Libyan crisis "would not be successful" without a suitable security environment.

Aboul Gheit made the remarks during a meeting with Jan Kubis, UN secretary general special envoy and head of UN Support Mission in Libya in Cairo, during which the two diplomats discussed means of pushing forward settlement to reach a political solution for the Libyan crisis.

Pushing forward the settlement, said Aboul Gheit, according to a statement by the League, required a ceasefire nationwide, getting foreign forces and mercenaries out of Libya, and eliminating threats posed by militias and armed groups on the transitional period.

The Arab League, he asserted, supported every efforts that would contribute to a full national settlement, including holding legislative and presidential elections, which were due next December.

Aboul Gheit reaffirmed support to Kubis in his mandate towards pushing forward settlement at political, economic and security fronts.

Kubis, meanwhile, thanked the Arab League for contributing to a settlement for the Libyan crisis specially during the transitional phase.

He expressed commitment to boosting cooperation between the UN and Arab League to preserve sovereignty and unity of the Libyan territories. —KUNA
