Saudi Gazette report

UMLUJ — Moved by the story on the stranded dolphins, the ambassador of the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia, Neil Crompton, paid a visit to Umluj on Monday.

The story received a wide response from the media and the public, in addition to attracting volunteers and competent authorities for a successful rescue operation.

During his visit to Umluj, the British ambassador witnessed the beauty of its shores, which are considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the Kingdom and are a destination for much marine life, including dolphins and turtles.

The ambassador expressed his admiration for what the Kingdom's government is doing and the programs it announced in service of the environment and its preservation, such as the Saudi Green Initiative announced by the Crown Prince, and its commitment to combating climate change, adding that an important part of these programs focuses on protecting the environment and the coral reefs in the Red Sea.

Ambassador Crompton said: “This region enjoys wonderful tourism projects that have been recently announced with an aim to protect the environment and its diversity and to preserve these areas for future generations”.

It is worth mentioning that dozens of dolphins were stranded on the beach of Umluj last month due to heavy winds and unstable weather conditions, prompting volunteers from the region and the competent authorities to participate in a wide rescue operation.

The rescue operations were attended by members of the Border Guard; the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture; Umluj Municipality, the Civil Defense; Al-Ber Association; environmental experts from the Red Sea Development Company, and a number of volunteers.

The rescue operation managed to save dozens of dolphins from certain death by moving them back to the deep waters of the Red Sea as 7 of them died.
