LONDON — London Bridge station was evacuated on Wednesday following the discovery of a "suspicious” item onboard a train.

Emergency services were deployed at the scene at London Bridge, south of the River Thames, and trains were halted for hours.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the station in Southwark was closed as a "precaution" and trains were being diverted while officers analyzed the item.

Thameslink said that as of 1.35 p.m. "the emergency services have dealt with the incident and the station will reopen shortly."

Trains were being diverted, and passengers should still expect some disruption on Wednesday afternoon, said Thameslink.

Social media images from the scene showed police clearing the area.

"Strange scenes at London. The police are everywhere evacuating the station and forcing people off the platforms," one passenger tweeted. — Agencies
