Saudi Arabia leads Arab efforts to highlight Palestinian cause at UN

May 15, 2021

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia is championing the Palestinian cause at the United Nations amid the ongoing amid continued Israeli attacks in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Leading from the front, Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative at the UN Abdallah Yahya Al-Mouallimi met on Friday with the permanent Chinese delegation to the UN, the president of the General Assembly Volkan Bozkir, to highlight the plight of the Palestinians following an Arab mini-group meeting.

The Arab mini-group meetings aim to shed light on the security council about the Palestinian issue and the Israeli attacks so that the international community can carry out its duties to protect civilians from such attacks.

It is worth noting that Saudi Arabia was and still is one of the first countries to support the Palestinian cause in the halls of the United Nations and before the international community.

The United Nations (UN) Security Council will hold an open meeting on Sunday to discuss the escalation of tensions between Israel and Palestine.

Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the UN, tweeted that the meeting will be held at 10 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT) on Sunday.

"China is deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. #UNSC should act now and send a strong message," said the tweet.

The Norwegian mission to the UN tweeted that Sunday's meeting was proposed by Norway, Tunisia and China.

China holds the Security Council presidency for the month of May. Two rounds of closed-door consultations on the issue have been held by the Security Council. — SG
