RIYADH — The Kingdom affirmed that it is continuing to consolidate the presence of culture in all its patterns in various walks of life, in a manner that is in tandem with the Kingdom's Vision 2030.

It began on the path of the National Cultural Strategy based on a firm and deep belief in the importance of studies and research for the advancement of the cultural sector at a sustainable pace.

This came in the Kingdom's speech on Friday, during the high-level meeting for culture and sustainable development, organized by the UN General Assembly, in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The speech was delivered by the Chair of the Second Committee in the Kingdom's permanent delegation to the UN, Sarah Ashour, who drew attention to the fact that the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom was keen to submit a detailed report on the "status of culture" on an annual basis.

This is with the objective of scientifically monitoring the manifestations of its cultural transformations and developments, and building on them, so as to examine the aspects of progress in achieving the goals, and drawing up the future transformation strategies.

She said: “Given that the year 2020 witnessed an acceleration in digital transformation to counter the impacts of coronavirus, such as converting cultural activities into virtual initiatives, the Ministry of Culture in my country has chosen the theme of “digitizing culture” as the title of the report on the “Status of culture in the Kingdom” for the year 2020, to shed light on the theme “digitization.”

Ashour shed light on a number of endeavors carried out by the Ministry of Culture in this regard during the preventive isolation period, under the motto "Culture in Isolation", which encompassed various cultural fields, including “Literature of Solitude”.

During its initial days, about 95,000 people registered on the platform “Literature of Solitude", while the ‘Playwrights Competition’ in its first week reached a reading of over 149,000 pages. The ministry also supported the Saudi film industry by publishing an electronic link for a Saudi film every day of the preventive isolation period through digital platforms.
