MUSCAT — More than half a million people in Oman have been inoculated against COVID-19, representing 15 percent of the target segments, the Oman News Agency reported on Wednesday, citing figures from the country’s health ministry.

According to the ministry, a total of 535,578 people have been vaccinated since the start of the national immunization campaign against COVID-19 in December.

Among them, 350,957, or 66 percent of recipients, have been injected with a single vaccine dose, while 184,621 people have been given both doses.

The ministry said it administers the second dose to those who take the first dose after 10 weeks or more.

The milestone comes as the country continues to see the surge in new COVID-19 cases and virus-related deaths.

On Wednesday, the health ministry recorded as many as 2,142 new cases of coronavirus and 26 more fatalities, bringing the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Sultanate to 240,708 and virus-related deaths to 2,591.

The ministry added that 744 new cases have recovered, bringing the total number to 212,808 recoveries.
