OIC, Arab states condemn latest Houthi drone attack on Abha airport

JEDDAH -- Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen has strongly condemned the Houthi militia’s latest terrorist attempt to threaten civilians by targeting Abha International Airport with a bomb-laden drone.

The Saudi-led Coalition fighting in Yemen said on Wednesday it had intercepted and destroyed three armed drones launched towards southern Saudi Arabia, including the city of Khamis Mushait.

The coalition also said it had destroyed a trio of boats laden with explosives in the province of Hodeidah, meant for use to carry out future attacks.

"Coalition forces have destroyed these explosives-laden boats," in efforts that help protect maritime shipping lines and global trade in the Red Sea chokepoint of Bab Al-Mandeb strait.

The OIC Secretary-General affirmed that endangering passengers and civilians’ lives is a cowardly terrorist act, a war crime, and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law (IHL).

He also reiterated the OIC’s support for all measures that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia takes to confront the practices of the terrorist Houthi militia in order to preserve its security, stability and the safety of its citizens and residents.

Dr. Al-Othaimeen called on the international community to take decisive stances to stop the continuous cowardly threats with ballistic missiles and bomb-laden drones that the Houthi militia uses in a systematic and deliberate manner to target civilians and civilian objects in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Djibouti strongly condemned the attempt to target Abha International Airport with a drone.

Djibouti affirmed, through its Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dya-Eddine Bamakhrama, its support for the measures taken by the coalition forces, to ensure the protection of civilian objects and civilians, whether in Yemen or in Saudi Arabia, in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law and its customary rules.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has also strongly condemned the terrorist Houthi militias’ attempts to attack Abha International Airport.

In a statement issued today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) in Abu Dhabi, the UAE affirmed that targeting the airport is a dangerous escalation and a cowardly act that threatens the security, safety and lives of civilians and passengers.

The ministry renewed the UAE’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia over these terrorist attacks and reiterated its firm position against all threats to the Kingdom's security and stability. The UAE also voiced support for all measures taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to maintain the safety and security of its citizens and residents.

The statement confirmed that the security of the UAE and that of Saudi Arabia are indivisible and that any threat to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is considered a threat to the security and stability of the UAE.

In Amman, the Spokesperson of Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ambassador Haitham Abu Al-Foul voiced Jordan’s strong condemnation of the Houthi militia's ongoing attacks against Saudi Arabia, including the latest targeting of Abha International Airport with a bomb-laden drone.

He said such repeated terrorist acts as well as targeting civilians and the security and stability of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

He also reiterated that Jordan stands by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the face of any threat to its security.

In Cairo, Egypt condemned Houthi militia's attempt to target Saudi Arabia's Abha International Airport with a booby-trapped drone. In a statement today by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt reiterated its support and full solidarity with the Kingdom against Houthi militia's continued terrorist attacks targeting civilian areas in the Kingdom.

It added that this act represents a flagrant violation of international law and a threat to the security and safety of civil aviation, air navigation and stability in the region.

Egypt reiterated its support for the measures being taken by the Kingdom to preserve and protect the security, stability, and safety of its citizens and residents from these ongoing hostilities.

In Tunis, the Secretariat General of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers has strongly condemned the terrorist attempt carried out by Houthi militia to target Abha International Airport with a booby-trapped drone.

"The Secretariat General of the Council, as it condemns in the strongest words this terrorist act that targets civilian facilities and endangers the lives of civilians, represents a war crime that requires accountability and holding the perpetrators accountable, and a clear evidence of the persistence of this militia in its flagrant transgressions of all sanctities, borders, laws and international norms.”

In Manama, the Kingdom of Bahrain has condemned the Houthi terrorist militia’s recurrent, deliberate and systematic targeting of Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia. In a statement issued by the Bahraini Foreign Affairs Ministry, Bahrain strongly deplored the targeting of the airport with a booby-trapped drone, in clear and explicit violation of the international humanitarian law and all global norms.

In Doha, the State of Qatar expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the attempt targeting Abha airport in Saudi Arabia. In a statement issued by the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Qatar affirmed that the targeting of civilian establishments and critical infrastructure contradicts with all international norms and laws.— SG/SPA
