GENEVA — Dr. Nurah Alamro of Saudi Arabia has been elected as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee. Dr. Alamro, a member of the Human Rights Council, was picked by secret ballot from the Group of Asia-Pacific States.

Dr. Alamro’s victory reflects Saudi Arabia’s leading role within the international community. This is also the outcome of the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman to support the sons and daughters of Saudi Arabia, and enhance their presence and participation in international bodies and mechanisms concerned with human rights within the framework of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Dr. Alamro, holder of doctorate degree in public health from Harvard University, is also a member of the joint dialogue team between the Kingdom and the European Union in the field of human rights.

It is noteworthy that the Human Rights Council is the UN’s inter-governmental mechanism tasked with the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe.

Established in 2007, the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee is composed of 18 experts and serves as the think-tank of the Council. It analyzes issues and problems at the Council’s request, provide expert advice, and make recommendations to the Council.

The Committee’s focus is mainly on studies and research-based advice and it is designed to be implementation-oriented.

As a result, its margin of maneuver and scope of advice are limited to themes pertaining to the Council’s mandate and choice. Since its inception, the Committee has developed a practice of suggesting topics to the Human Rights Council by way of research proposals.
