ISLAMABAD — One policeman was killed and nine others were injured when a bomb went off near a police van in the capital city Quetta of Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province Monday afternoon, rescue officials said.

The injured have been rushed to Civil Hospital in Quetta by the rescue teams, and a fresh contingent of police reached the site and cordoned off the area, Muhammad Zeeshan, manager of operations at the rescue department of the Edhi Foundation in Quetta said.

Confirming the attack, spokesperson for the Balochistan government Liaquat Shahwani said that the van was passing by a university when it came under attack by the militants.

The militants fled the scene following the attack and police forces have been mobilized to track and trace them, Shahwani said. He added that though the attack happened very close to the university, the students and university buildings remained safe.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. — Xinhua
