CAIRO — The Arab League (AL) welcomed on Saturday an announcement by the United Nations (UN) to work with the Sudanese sides for facilitating political transition and tackling difficulties amid stalemate following the prime minister's resignation last week.

In a statement, the Arab League reiterated the importance of tackling all reasons for political, social and economic instability in Sudan.

"The pan-Arab body is willing to fully cooperate with the UN for reaching consensus that could contribute in meeting the Sudanese aspirations of peace, stability, development, and democracy," said the statement.

The UN said earlier that it would hold talks in Sudan aimed at salvaging a democratic transition.

Volker Perthes, special representative of the UN secretary-general for Sudan, said in a statement the UN-facilitated political process would seek a "sustainable path forward towards democracy and peace" in the country.

This support comes out of the League's keenness on preserving the Sudanese people's gains made over the past two years and addressing all reasons behind economic, social and political instability in the country, the League said in a statement.

The bloc also affirmed its readiness and resolve to fully cooperate with the UN in order to help reach consensuses that contribute to meeting aspirations of the Sudanese people towards stability, peace, democracy and development, according to the statement.

Egypt on Saturday underlined backing for the ongoing UN efforts to restore stability in Sudan by launching inter-Sudanese dialogue aiming at staving off looming chaos in this Arab country.

"Egypt is closely monitoring the latest developments in Sudan Sudan's security and stability are an integral part of the security and stability of Egypt and the region," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Egypt urged all Sudanese parties to work together in order to handpick a new caretaker prime minister and set up a new government at an early date, voicing willingness to provide this government with all possible means. — Agencies
