RIYADH — The Ministry of Commerce arrested on Monday a Snapchat celebrity and referred him to the Public Prosecution after he was caught selling counterfeit brands in violation of the trademark and e-commerce laws.

The Saudi national sold fake women’s products through a famous account on Snapchat. He delivered the products to customers from elegant apartments or at homes in luxury cars.

The ministry seized the fake merchandise estimated at a total value exceeding SR700,000.

According to the Trademarks Law, anyone who displays or sells products carrying a fake trademark will be punished with imprisonment for a period of up to one year and a fine of up to 1 million Saudi riyals, or either of these.

The E-commerce Law stipulates penalties of up to 1 million Saudi riyals for anyone found violating the law, blocking their social media accounts and closure of stores to prevent them from further trading, in addition to defaming them in the mass media at their own expense.
