CAIRO — Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the two-month humanitarian truce agreed to by the conflicting Yemeni parties, which went into force Saturday.

Aboul Gheit said in a statement Saturday that the truce is in compliance with the aspirations of the vast majority of the Yemeni people, whose suffering has been exacerbated by the seven-year war, expressing his appreciation for the efforts of the UN and the UN Envoy to help the parties reach a truce.

The Secretary-General appealed to all parties involved in the conflict in Yemen to respect the humanitarian truce, ensure a complete ceasefire throughout the country, and stop all military operations across the Yemeni border, allowing international and non-governmental organizations to carry out their work to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Yemenis.

In Brussels, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell too welcomed the two-month armistice in Yemen announced by UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, to which the parties to the conflict in Yemen agreed, which states that all forms of military operations inside Yemen and across the border would be halted.

In a statement, the European Union valued the parties' willingness to accept the truce and the accompanying measures, including fuel shipments entering the port of Hodeidah, commercial flights to and from Sanaa, and negotiations to open roads in Taiz and other governorates, calling on the concerned parties to cooperate with Grundberg for a permanent ceasefire, address urgent economic and humanitarian measures and resume the political process.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the announcement by Grundberg that the Yemen conflict parties agreed to a two-month armistice in Yemen, during which all forms of military operations inside Yemen and across the border would be halted.

The OIC expressed its appreciation of the UN Envoy’s efforts, hoping that the truce would enable alleviating the human suffering of the Yemeni people and provide appropriate conditions for the Yemeni parties to reduce escalation and reach a comprehensive political settlement of the conflict that would achieve peace, security and stability in Yemen and the region.

The United Arab Emirates has welcomed the announcement by Grundberg to commence a truce and halt all forms of military operations in Yemen and on the Saudi-Yemeni borders.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), the UAE welcomed the announcement by the Yemeni government and the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, to accept the truce, stressing its support for all efforts made by the Special Envoy to enhance prospects for peace and stability in Yemen and the region.

The UAE underscored the crucial role played by Saudi Arabia in achieving stability and security for Yemen. Moreover, the UAE reiterated its commitment to stand by the Yemeni people and support their legitimate aspirations for development and prosperity, as part of its policy to support and achieve in its entirety the interests of the region’s peoples.

In Doha, Qatar welcomed the announcement by the UN of the two-month truce in Yemen starting today, subject to renewal with the consent of the parties.

In a statement, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Qatar's aspiration that the step would pave the way for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Yemen, and the involvement of all parties in the Yemeni crisis — with the support of the international community — in the comprehensive political track and national reconciliation, to achieve the aspirations of the Yemeni people in security, stability, and prosperity.

In Manama, Bahrain too welcomed the announcement by Grundberg that a truce was reached in Yemen for a period of two months, during which all military operations inside Yemen and on the Saudi-Yemeni borders would be halted.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appreciated the response of the command of the Coalition to restore legitimacy in Yemen and the Yemeni parties to the efforts of the UN envoy, which build on the initiative announced by Saudi Arabia in March 2021 to end the Yemeni crisis and reach a comprehensive political solution.

The Ministry hoped that this important step would pave the way towards ending the war in Yemen and reach a comprehensive political settlement between the Yemeni parties in order to achieve peace and stability in the region.

The Sultanate of Oman welcomed the announcement by the Special Envoy for a two-month truce in the Republic of Yemen.

In a statement, the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised the positive discussions held by the UN envoy during his recent visits to Muscat, stressing its continuing efforts with the United Nations and concerned parties aiming at ending the war and reaching a comprehensive political settlement.

The Arab Parliament welcomed the statement issued by Grundberg, which includes the announcement of a two-month humanitarian truce starting tomorrow, stressing that it is a real opportunity to resume the political process and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

In a statement, the Parliament considered the positive atmosphere of the Yemeni-Yemeni consultations hosted in the capital, Riyadh, and under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as a great opportunity for Yemenis to restore the state, praising at the same time the efforts of Saudi Arabia to restore stability in Yemen and end the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The Arab Parliament called on the Houthi militias to comply with and respect the armistice, and to deal with the ongoing discussions regarding proposals for the next steps.

In Riyadh, the GCC Secretary General Dr. Naif Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf welcomed the announcement issued by the Special Envoy, and the Yemeni government’s announcement of the start of a two-month truce, halting all forms of military operations inside Yemen and on the Saudi borders

The GCC Secretary-General affirmed that the issuance of this declaration comes as an affirmation of the importance the international community attaches to the Yemeni crisis, praising the efforts of the Special Envoy in declaring the truce.

Also Egypt, Jordan and Djibouti welcomed the statement issued by Grundberg, which included the announcement of a two-month nationwide truce in Yemen, starting today, on Saturday.

In a statement in Cairo, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Egypt looks forward to the armistice contributing to advancing efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Yemeni crisis, and supporting political solution initiatives, including the current consultations hosted by Riyadh, based on the relevant Security Council resolutions, the Gulf initiative and its mechanisms.

The executive branch and the outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue, in a manner that preserves Yemen’s unity and independence, and preserves the capabilities of the Yemeni people and their aspiration towards security, stability and prosperity.

In Amman, the Jordanian government welcomed the announcement by the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, that a two-month truce was reached and the cessation of all military operations in Yemen.

The official spokesman for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Haitham Abu Al-Ful, stated that Jordan supports the efforts and endeavors of the United Nations to resolve the Yemeni crisis, stressing the need to reach a political solution based on the approved references represented in the GCC initiative and its executive mechanism.

In Djibouti, the government of Djibouti welcomed the announcement of the Yemeni government to accept the truce declared under the auspices of the United Nations, which comes in the context of Saudi Arabia's initiative to end the Yemeni crisis to reach a comprehensive political solution.

Djibouti emphasizes that it always urges the Yemeni parties to resort to dialogue and understanding as a secure and sound solution to save the Yemeni people.

The United Kingdom welcomed the United Nations' announcement of a two-month truce in Yemen, stating that this is the best opportunity to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Yemenis and improve stability in the region.

A spokesman for the British Foreign and Development Office said, "His country welcomes the announcement of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, of reaching a two-month truce in Yemen."

The United Kingdom also welcomed the recent political consultations led by the United Nations Special Envoy, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)'s initiative for inter-Yemeni dialogue, stressing that there is no military solution to the war in Yemen, but rather an inclusive political dialogue is the only way to reach a sustainable solution.

Algeria has welcomed the announcement that the parties in Yemen reached a truce, expressing hope that this step would constitute an important station to reach a permanent agreement that guarantees a comprehensive settlement of the crisis in the country.

A statement by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the issuance of the statement of the Special Envoy, in which he announced that a two-month truce was reached in this country, starting from the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Algeria once again valued this initiative, stressing its support for all efforts and initiatives aimed at finding a political solution, especially the current consultations being hosted by Saudi Arabia, the Gulf initiative and its executive mechanisms, and the outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue to achieve a lasting reconciliation that preserves Yemen’s unity and independence, and returns security, stability and peace to the region. — SPA
