COLOMBO — Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled from President's House on Saturday as enraged protesters demanding to resolve the acute economic crisis in the country stormed his house.
The Sri Lankan news site Daily Mirror reported that Rajapaksa fled his House just before the protesters stormed his residence.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called an emergency meeting of all political parties to discuss the current situation and find a way out of the political impass in the island country.
The security forces had managed to evacuate the president before the protesters entering his house.
Around 30 people including security personnel were injured in clashes as the police and army used tear gas and fired in the air to ward off protestors who surrounded the presidential residence.
Sri Lanka is passing through a tough economic crisis that has impacted the supply of essential foods, fuel and other basic commodities leading to several popular protests in the last few months. — Agencies
