UK: Truss, Sunak candidates to replace Johnson as PM

July 20, 2022

LONDON — The Conservative Party (Tories) announced on Wednesday that Secretary of State Liz Truss, and former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak were the remaining candidates to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the final round of elections scheduled in August.

The Chairman of the 1922 Committee of the House of Commons, Graham Brady told the press that the voting process had excluded former Secretary of Defense Penny Mordaunt, which gained only 105 votes, while Sunak and Truss gained 137 and 113 of the votes respectively.

Both candidates are expected to embark on a miniscule election campaign in August to gain the trust of conservative MPs and some 160,000 members of the party.

The name of the new British Prime Minister is expected to be announced on September fifth. — Agencies
