JAKARTA — Five people have died in floods and landslides following the extreme weather that hit most parts of Bali, Indonesia.

Rentin, head of the District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Bali said that heavy rain and strong winds occurred from 12.30 midnight to 6.30 am local time on Friday.

The phenomenon caused landslides, uprooted trees, submerged roads and floods covering seven districts, he said in a statement, according to Bernama.

Two cars got stuck in a landslide and a road collapsed in Bangli causing the death of three people and injuring three others.

A construction worker died after being buried by a landslide at a road project site in Gianyar, while the body of a flood victim who was swept away by strong currents was found in Kota Denpasar.

Rentin said that 33 tourists, including 23 foreign tourists, were evacuated after their accommodation in Badung was flooded by almost one metre of water.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that extreme weather will continue to hit the holiday island from 9 October until 15 October. — Agencies
