First brain surgery to treat depression successful in Saudi Arabia

MADINAH — Saudi Arabia witnessed the first-ever successful brain surgery to treat depression.

A medical team specialized in neurosurgery and psychiatry at King Salman Medical City in Madinah has succeeded in alleviating the suffering of a patient from chronic depression.

The surgical intervention has led to relieve of severe symptoms of depression and anxiety suffered by the patient for over 25 years.

A medical team consisting of neurosurgeons and psychiatrists was formed to examine the case and carry out the surgical intervention. The team performed bilateral anterior gyrus resection under full anesthesia, which was successful without any complications. The patient’s mood and psychological condition have improved. The patient’s sleep hours returned to normal, and he moved away from permanent sadness, anxiety, and excessive thinking about death.

It is noteworthy that King Salman Medical City provides neurosurgery services for patients suffering from depression. The medical team in the city is using advanced and precise surgical techniques to relieve symptoms of depression, and this service is the only one of its kind in the Middle East region.
