DOHA — A possible victory of the Saudi national team against Mexico in the third round of Group C matches on Wednesday would make the way for the Green Falcons to a vibrant entry to the knockout round of 16 in the World Cup 2022, for the first time after a gap of 28 years, and the chances are bright for such a scenario.

It will raise the Saudi squad’s tally to six points, and the Mexican national team’s balance will remain a single point. Mexico suffered a defeat at the hands of Argentina 2-0 on Saturday before having a draw with Poland in the first round of their match.

The Saudi team lost to Poland 2-0 in their second round of matches on Saturday. The Green Falcons are preparing to face their Mexican counterpart Wednesday in the third round of the World Cup.

The Saudi squad, securing three points from its stunning victory over Argentina, stand second in Group C when it finished two matches. Poland emerged as the topper in the group, winning four points from two matches while Argentina have three points from two matches while Mexico have only one point from two matches. Even a draw with Mexico will raise Green’s balance to four points and Mexico’s balance to only two points.

In the event of a victory by Mexico, the chances of the Saudi team will disappear as the Mexican national team will raise its balance to four points.

The stunning victory against Argentina is certainly the biggest Saudi gain in the history of the World Cup. In 1994, the Green Falcons got to the knockout phase and defeated Morocco and Belgium.
