Minister of Culture: The land of Saudi Arabia embraced most towering Arab poets of all time

‘The Year of Arab Poetry’ will be celebrated with diverse events throughout 2023

The land of Saudi Arabia has embraced since ancient times the most important poets in the history of Arabic literature such as Imru al Qais, Maymun Ibn Qays Al-A’sha, Al-Nabigha Al-Dhubyani, Zuhair bin Abi Salma, Antarah bin Shaddad, Tarafa bin Al-Abd, Amr bin Kulthum, and Labeed bin Rabia.

RIYADH — Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan reaffirmed that the decision of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday to name 2023 as the ‘Year of Arab Poetry’ represents a celebration of the pivotal value that poetry enjoys in Arab culture throughout history. The land of Saudi Arabia has embraced the most towering Arab poets of all time, he pointed out.

“The creativity of Saudi poets comes as an extension of an authentic literary experience of great historical depth. During the ‘Year of Arab Poetry,’ the ministry will strive to support Arab poetry through initiatives, activities, and events that are held throughout the year in a diverse and rich cultural format,” he said.

Prince Badr said that pride in patriotism and its associated cultural elements is one of the main objectives that the Ministry of Culture is working to implement. The ‘Year of Arab Poetry’ initiative will be an inclusive umbrella for all aspects of celebrating this main component of Arab culture in general and the Saudi culture in particular,” he pointed out.

According to the minister, the poetic arena in the Kingdom and the Arab world enjoys inexhaustible prosperity and is accepted and celebrated by the public. He emphasized that the ‘Year of Arab Poetry’ is to enhance and support the presence and influence of Arab poetry.

“The land of Saudi Arabia has embraced since ancient times the most important poets in the history of Arabic literature such as Imru al Qais, Maymun Ibn Qays Al-A’sha, Al-Nabigha Al-Dhubyani, Zuhair bin Abi Salma, Antarah bin Shaddad, Tarafa bin Al-Abd, Amr bin Kulthum, and Labeed bin Rabia. The Kingdom has also formed a source of inspiration for the most important immortal Arabic poems, which made it the cradle of Arabic poetry as it was also a cradle of civilizations,” he said, adding, “our country is the land of poets whose journey has been immortalized in the history of the Arabs for thousands of years, whether the poets of the pre-Islamic era or the poets of the era of the early Islam and beyond. Poetry was associated with the Arabs and their culture, and constitute a source of historical documents on which historians and researchers relied to monitor historical events.”
