RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) emphasized that the presence of the frog logo on some products has nothing to do with the product’s ingredients. The authority’s clarification came in response to a video being circulated on social media with a warning against eating products bearing this logo.
The SFDA said in a statement that the presence of the frog logo on some products indicates that the firm that produces it follows international standards and rules that are associated with sustainable production and the environment. “The trademark also indicates that the manufacturer has been subject to intense scrutiny by strict certifications and standards,” the authority said.
The frog logo is common in chocolate, coffee, tea, and some fruit products in the United States of America, Canada, and European countries. The logo symbolizes that that product was cultivated or materials used in it are from certified and environmentally friendly farms.
The frog seal is certified by the Rainforest Alliance, which is an international non-governmental environmental organization operating in 70 countries. The organization, with a mission of saving the rainforests, was founded in 1987 by the famous American environmental activist Daniel Katz.
According to the Rainforest Alliance, the frog seal means that the certified product or ingredient was produced using methods that support the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. The Rainforest Alliance seal promotes collective action for people and nature, and it allows the customer to recognize and choose products that contribute toward a better future for people and the planet.
