CAIRO —Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived here on Sunday for talks with his Egyptian counterpart Abdul-Fattah El-Sisi on the possibility of a durable ceasefire in Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian embassy here stated that both leaders discussed the Egyptian, Arab, regional and international efforts to deal with the humanitarian disaster currently taking place in the Gaza Strip.

The visit focuses on how to put an end to the atrocities being committed by the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza and other parts of the occupied Palestinian territories, Palestine Ambassador to Egypt Diyab Allouh told reporters.

The summit talks with President El-Sisi will also deal with the progress of the efforts of Egypt, and other regional and international players, to address the unprecedented humanitarian disaster in Gaza resulting from the three-month Israeli aggression, he noted.

Both leaders are also expected to discuss the efforts aiming to prevent forced displacement of Gazans and halt the crimes of the Israeli occupation forces and Jewish settlers in the holy city of Jerusalem and other parts of the West Bank.

They will reaffirm commitment to cooperation and coordination towards various issues at Arab, regional and international forums, Ambassador Allouh added.

The visit also aims to search for ways to open a political horizon that leads to the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital, the embassy said.

The embassy affirmed that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people inside and outside of Palestine.

Abbas is accompanied on this visit by Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the PLO Hussein Al-Sheikh, Head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service Maj. Gen.Majed Faraj, and the President’s Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi Al-Khalidi.
