RIYADH — The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has reported remarkable progress in Saudi Arabia's air traffic performance for 2023. There has been significant growth across flights, passenger numbers, and global connectivity, which is attributed to the implementation of the Saudi Aviation Strategy.

In 2023, the Kingdom experienced a 16% increase in the total number of flights, rising from 701,290 to 814,995. The number of passengers surged by 26% from 88 million to 112 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia expanded its air connectivity, now linking 148 destinations with at least 52 flights to and from the Kingdom daily.

The growth in passenger traffic was predominantly driven by low-cost carriers (LCCs), which now account for 44% of the domestic market, up from 27%. This significant rise underscores changing traveler preferences within the domestic market and highlights increased competition, choice, and value. On the international front, LCCs have seen their market share double from 16% before the pandemic to 32% in 2023.

GACA President Abdulaziz Al-Duailej commented on the achievements: "The exceptional 2023 air traffic figures are a testament to the strategic vision of the Saudi Aviation Strategy, positioning the Kingdom as a leading force in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is now more connected globally than ever before, achieving record double-digit growth in flights and passengers during 2023."

He further noted, "Saudi Arabia is creating unprecedented opportunities for global aviation and the private sector. Today's announcements mark a pathway for further growth, with the Madinah Airport's capacity set to double — a reflection of the success of this Public-Private Partnership project."

These performance figures were unveiled at the 12th Saudi Aviation Strategy Steering Committee meeting in Madinah, where several growth initiatives were announced. Among these, the Madinah Airport revealed a master plan to double its capacity from 8 to 17 million passengers annually. Saudia, the national carrier, also announced plans to expand its operations at Madinah Airport, including dedicated aircraft and increased capacity to better serve pilgrims and other travelers.
