Palestinian death toll nears 35,400 as Israel continues to pound Gaza

May 18, 2024

GAZA — The situation in Gaza continues to be dire as the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli offensive reaches approximately 35,400 since last October, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza.

The conflict, which escalated following a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, has also resulted in significant injuries, with the ministry reporting around 79,366 individuals hurt in the ongoing conflict.

The past 24 hours alone have seen 83 deaths and 105 injuries due to Israeli attacks. Rescue efforts are challenged, with many individuals reported to be trapped under rubble or stranded on roads, unreachable by emergency services.

The extensive military campaign has not only led to a high number of casualties but has also devastated the infrastructure of Gaza.

According to UN reports, the destruction has displaced approximately 85% of the population within the enclave, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis amid strict blockades limiting access to essential supplies like food, water, and medical care.

The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, issued an interim ruling in January, suggesting it is "plausible" that actions taken by Israel could be classified as genocide. The court has ordered Israel to cease such actions and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza. — Agencies
