Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale concludes with massive attendance

DIRIYAH —
The second edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, titled "After Rain," concluded recently, drawing an impressive 222,341 visitors between February 20 and May 24, 2024.

This figure more than doubles the attendance of the inaugural edition in 2022. Held in the JAX District of the historic town of Diriyah, the event was organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation.

"After Rain" showcased 177 artworks by 100 artists from 44 countries, including 47 new commissions. Under the artistic direction of Ute Meta Bauer and co-curators Wejdan Reda, Rose Lejeune, Anca Rujoiu, Ana Salazar, and adjunct curator Rahul Gudipudi, the biennale served as a dynamic platform to explore contemporary art’s role in a rapidly evolving society.

The event attracted a diverse audience; over 32% were young people under 32, and 4.5% were children under 18, with more than 75% of the attendees being Saudi residents. The comprehensive public program included over 11,000 participants, and the educational initiative welcomed 8,000 children from 200 schools. Moreover, 2,900 individuals participated in 463 guided tours.

The closing week saw a plethora of activities including panel discussions, performances, and concerts, attracting both local families and international visitors. Ute Meta Bauer expressed her gratitude toward the co-curators and foundation team for their dedication, celebrating the biennale's success in fostering community engagement. Aya Al Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, highlighted the biennale's role in enhancing the cultural landscape and uniting people through art.
