Saudi delegation participates in ITU Council meeting in Geneva

GENEVA — A Saudi Arabian delegation led by Dr. Muhammad Al-Tamimi, the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, is taking part in the “International Telecommunication Union Council 2024” (ITU) meeting in Geneva.

The participation of Saudi Arabia in the ITU session, which will continue until 14 June, is meant to enhance international cooperation to develop the communications and technology sector, support the Union’s activities, harness capabilities and expertise, and work to assist member states.

Dr. Al-Tamimi gave a keynote speech at the opening session. He reviewed Saudi Arabia’s contributions to developing policies and organizations that enhance coordination in international efforts, and its role in developing new regulations and standards to improve performance and quality in the telecommunications sector.

He pointed out Saudi Arabia's support for sustainable development goals by enhancing access to telecommunications and technology services in remote and interior areas of the country and improving healthcare services by promoting digitization.

The ITU Council includes 48 countries, including Saudi Arabia, elected out of 193 member states of the Union.

The Council conducts the work of the Union in the periods that fall between the Plenipotentiary Conferences.

It also undertakes, among its roles, to consider issues of telecommunications policies and ensure responsiveness.

The Union's activities, policies and strategies for the rapidly changing telecommunications sector, in addition to managing the Union's work and programs and approving its budgets.
