Saudi culinary delights: Three pastries join UNESCO's Creative Cities' Baking initiative

The Culinary Arts Commission announced on Wednesday the inclusion of three Saudi pastries in the "Creative Cities' Baking" initiative, showcasing their historical and culinary heritage from Saudi cities listed on UNESCO's Creative Cities Network.

These selections recognize efforts to preserve cultural heritage for sustainable development.

The pastries representing Saudi Creative Cities in UNESCO include: Al-Ahsa, recognized for handicrafts and folk arts, Qassim Province's Buraidah, recognized for culinary arts, and Taif, recognized for literature.

Selected based on criteria including local flour preparation and strong cultural ties, these pastries include Al-Ahsa's Al-Khubz Al-Ahmar (Red Bread), a unique type made with dates and distinctive spices, Buraidah's "Al-Kleija," a traditional sweet reflecting the heritage of Buraidah and Qassim Province, and Taif's "Al-Mallah Bread," one of Saudi Arabia's oldest baked goods in culinary art heritage.

This listing highlights the cultural richness and diversity of Saudi Creative Cities through these distinctive pastries and their preparation methods. This initiative aligns with the commission's strategy to promote Saudi culinary arts globally, emphasizing international knowledge and cultural exchange.
