WASHINGTON — Joe Biden announced on Sunday his decision to withdraw from the 2024 US presidential race, citing the best interest of his party and the nation.

In a letter addressed to the American people, Biden highlighted the significant progress made during his administration, including economic growth, healthcare improvements, and legislative achievements.

While Biden initially intended to seek reelection, he believes stepping down is in the nation's and his party's best interest. He will continue to fulfill his presidential duties for the remainder of his term and will address the nation later this week to discuss his decision in more detail.

In his letter, Biden expressed gratitude to the American people and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support. He emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation, asserting that the US can achieve anything when working together.

"Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We've made historic investments in rebuilding our nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We've provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today," Biden wrote in his letter. — SG
