Pro-Palestinian protesters rally at Georgetown University, call for divestment from Israel

September 05, 2024

WASHINGTON — Pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, chanting against Israeli actions in Gaza and calling for the school’s divestment from Israel. The protest, which coincided with the start of the new semester, saw students chanting "If we don’t get no justice, then they don’t get no peace" and "Free, free Palestine,” while blocking a campus intersection and gathering outside Healy Hall. This demonstration follows a similar protest at Columbia University in New York City on Tuesday, as student-led pro-Palestine protests continue to erupt on US campuses. The protests began on April 17 when police arrested students during demonstrations at Columbia University. The protests come against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has resulted in the deaths of over 40,800 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and left nearly 94,400 others injured since October 7 last year. The blockade of Gaza has led to severe shortages of essential supplies, with Israel facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice. — Agencies
