Madrid meeting addresses Palestinian state recognition and peace efforts

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met on Friday with members of the ministerial committee assigned by the Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit.

The committee, chaired by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, included the Prime Minister of Palestine Dr. Mohammed Mustafa, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan Ayman Al-Safadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of Egypt Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye Hakan Fidan, Secretary General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hissein Brahim Taha, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi.

The meeting focused on the urgent need to support the recognition of a Palestinian state and address ongoing regional challenges.

Discussions highlighted the importance of implementing the two-state solution, with the establishment of a Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and other international initiatives.

The committee members underscored the necessity for the Israeli occupation army to withdraw from the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing and the Philadelphi Corridor, and to restore full control to the Palestinian Authority.

They also addressed the urgent need to halt Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and the escalating violence in the West Bank, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the provision of adequate humanitarian aid.

The meeting also emphasized halting the expansion of Israeli settlements and activating international accountability mechanisms for violations of international and humanitarian law. The aim is to achieve a just and comprehensive peace, safeguard Palestinian rights, and ensure regional security.

Foreign ministers and representatives from Norway, Slovenia, and Ireland, along with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, were also in attendance.
